Arm, Elbow & Hand Injuries

The combined function of the arm, elbow and hand serves as an extension of our body and shoulder. All of these parts work together and injury to the elbow can affect how the hand and upper arm perform. When the hand is hurt it can impact the upper arm and ultimately transfer pain and disability to the elbow.

Injury to these areas is often a result of overuse to the soft tissues and surrounding structures. Two common injuries that occur are medial epicondylitis, a pain on the inside of the elbow, and lateral epicondylitis, a pain on the outside of the elbow. Dermal-Fascial Restoration℠ (DFR) addresses hidden tissue tightness of these structures that are often misunderstood and left untreated with traditional methods. When we release adhesions in this region of the body, it allows for improved function and a quick return to a healthy physical well-being.

Common Conditions of the Arm, Elbow and Hand
Mettler Therapy routinely treats these arm, elbow and hand conditions with excellent and lasting results:

  • Bicep pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
  • Medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow)
  • Olecranon bursitis
  • Radial tunnel syndrome
  • Sprained wrist/finger
  • Trigger finger
  • Ulnar tunnel syndrome

This is how we utilize DFR to address the following conditions:

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

Are your hands, fingers, or arms going numb at night? Do you feel clumsy with your fingers while trying to type or grip objects? If so, there is a strong possibility that you’ve developed carpal tunnel syndrome. This condition is often caused by repetitive use of the hands and wrists with activities such as typing, factory work, or repeated gripping. It usually happens gradually and will worsen over time. As it worsens, the tissues around the nerve in the wrist and hand develop tightness and adhesions causing more irritation and more pain. Left untreated, symptoms can get to the point where your doctor may suggest surgery. It is known that early and correct treatment of the carpal tunnel can prevent surgery and help a full return to function. Our physical therapy experts utilize a unique manual therapy treatment to release the abnormal adhesions which allow the carpal tunnel to open up and be free. Once this is accomplished, carefully guided stretching and strengthening complete the recovery process and help ensure success.

Lateral / Medial Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow / Golfer’s Elbow)

Have you been experiencing an unwelcomed pain over the top or bottom of your elbow that is worsened with activity? Many people suffer from pain in these two areas as a result of muscle overuse, poor mobility in the forearms, and a strong grip. Without realizing it, we use our hands and forearms many times a day and for many tasks with the muscles and tendons bearing most of the demands. Over time, these demands can lead to tendonitis in the muscles caused by repeated inflammation and increasing tissue adhesions. While it is true that using ice and straps can be helpful, treatment often is incomplete without a comprehensive evaluation and treatment. Our expert staff at Mettler Therapy utilizes a unique manual therapy intervention to release tissue adhesions and help free up muscles and tendons. Combined with up-to-date stretching and strengthening treatments, it is possible to break the cycle of pain and return to activity at full capacity.
